CERT Newsletter Vol. I (April 5, 2002)
Thank you for your interest in becoming part of a Community Emergency Response Team CERT). Becoming part of a CERT will teach you skills like disaster preparedness, fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster psychology and team organization. This training will make you better prepared to take care of yourself and others in times of crisis.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is now working with your state training officer for emergency management to train CERT instructors in your state. Instructor teams from emergency management and response agencies will then visit communities around the state to conduct the CERT training for citizens like you.
What can you do while you wait for the CERT training to be offered to you? You can review the CERT Student Manual and literature about natural and man-made hazards that may affect you, your loved ones, and your community.
Go to the FEMA library at http://www.fema.gov/library/lib07.htm Also, if you have not already done so, please take a look at the "Connection" Newsletter at http://training.fema.gov/emiweb/cert/connect.htm It has stories about CERT programs across the country and it will give you ideas about how CERT can benefit your community.
Thank you again for taking an important step to help make our nation be better prepared. We appreciate your patience as we build capacity to instruct hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens.
